East Carolina University pirate pride was back and louder than ever in anticipation of Saturday’s game.
Purple and gold tents surrounded Dowdy-Fickelin Stadium with thousands tailgating.
Between pig pickins’, corn hole, and dozens of other entertaining things to do, most fans and alumni say there’s nothing else like the pirate atmosphere.
"It just really has a good camaraderie that you don't get at other schools, and other tailgates. Everybody is all about ECU, good times, good friends, amazing memories," said ECU alum William Creel.
For former pirate players, it’s an even more special feeling.
"Being a former player, every time they come out of the tunnel, or the pirate skull now, it almost makes you want to cry because you miss it that bad," said Wilson Raynor, "And now you come back and you get to see it, and you know you've been there, and it makes you enjoy it and cherish it that much more."
