East Carolina's defensive coordinator has been fired by head football coach Ruffin McNeill.
The university today says McNeill decided not to renew Brian Mitchell's contract. Mitchell has been with the Pirates since January 2010 after four years as cornerbacks coach at Texas Tech and 11 seasons as an assistant at Brigham Young.
"There's never a good time to make a coaching change, especially one that involves a friend and colleague who I respect professionally," said McNeill. "However, I have the responsibility and commitment to maintain the best interest for this program and East Carolina University."
McNeill says the search for a new defensive coordinator will begin immediately.
