ECU Faculty Officers Oppose Allowing Guns In Locked Cars

A near unanimous voice of faculty opposition at ECU to proposed state legislation that would allow concealed weapons left in locked cars on campus.

ECU faculty officers drafted a statement against the measure -- which they in turn allowed faculty senators to vote on electronically.

An overwhelming vote of 43 to 3 -- showed support for the opposing stance -- which falls in line with UNC system President Tom Ross, Chancellor Steve Ballard, and campus leaders from across the university system.

Mark Sprague is the faculty chairman and says, "If campus law enforcement comes and you have bystanders that have weapons -- they may have some difficulty deciding who they need to engage -- it can leads to all sorts of issues."

Faculty senators are elected by their respective departments throughout the university.

That faculty statement and vote was emailed to President Ross.
