Driver Charged In Crash That Killed Flower Girl

The Highway Patrol says the driver in a wreck that killed a six year old girl on her way to a wedding has now been charged.

Troopers say Mupin Cummings of Pinetops was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle for the death of Ava Kendall. The six year old was on her way to be a flower girl in a wedding April 9th when the accident happened on Highway 43 outside of Greenville.

Trooper David Swanson said Cummings' Jeep Cherokee crossed the center line and collided with a Honda Accord.

The woman is still hospitalized at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Two bridesmaids in the car were also injured and hospitalized. 22-year-old Michele Garland 13-year-old Lindsey Whitehurst are from Greenville, as was Ava.

Bride-to-be Rachel Jones cancelled the wedding following the fatal wreck.

Cummings has an August court date.

Mike, this little girl was not in the care of the lady being charged. The girl was in the car going to a wedding when the other lady crossed the line and hit them.

How sad for such a tragedy like this to happen. As a parent I don't even want to imagine the heartache that all involved have gone thru and will go thru. My prayers are with everyone involved.

I'm so sorry for everyone involved! It could have happened to any of us, rather which car we were in. I think it should be up to the family to take legal action if they so choose too. I'm praying that all of this will workout for the family of this precious little one, and for the family on the other end as well. God Bless

My 6 year old child is still strapped in a 5 point harness seat and will be until the 80 lb limit is met. Britax makes safe seats for big kids. Parents shouldn't be so quick to put their child in a booster. A booster may not have saved her either.
