A group from Dixon High School in Jacksonville is among the middle and high school students from across North Carolina in Raleigh to demonstrate their skills in building model bridges.
The state Department of Transportation Statewide Model Bridge Building Competition is scheduled for Friday at the department's auditorium in Raleigh.
Four middle schools and four high schools are competing. Each school team will be judged in written report, oral presentation, design drawing and model efficiency.
The competition is designed to emphasize the development of math and science skills, but it also provides an opportunity to use problem-solving strategies and critical thinking, enhance communication skills and apply research and presentation skills.
