Brothers Charged After Deputy Kills Pit Bull

Two brothers have now been charged after their pit bull attacked a Duplin County deputy sheriff Wednesday evening.

Derrick and Giovanni Pemperton have been charged with failing to secure a vicious dog and simple assault.

Wednesday night, Deputy Matthew English said he was trying to serve a warrant on Giovanni Pemperton when his brother answered the door. Their dog ran past the man and started biting English on the upper leg. The deputy ended up shooting and killing the dog.

Bond for the brothers was set at $1,000. The deputy is having to undergo rabies shots because the pit bull was not to to date on its vaccines.

Previous Story

A deputy sheriff is undergoing rabies shots after being bit by a pit bull yesterday.

Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace tells WITN News that his deputy ended up shooting and killing the dog.

It happened late Wednesday afternoon when Deputy Matthew English was trying to serve an arrest warrant at a home on Highway 117 in Warsaw. A man opened the door, and the dog charged outside and bit English on the upper left thigh, according to the sheriff. Wallace says the man at the home shut the door and the dog continued to attack the deputy. The deputy then shot the dog.

The admitted today that their pit bull not up to date on its rabies vaccine, so Deputy English has started to receive rabies shots.

The truth is, any dog can attack. It's just Pit Bulls are the latest thing. While it's true that there are bad owners who raise their dogs to be mean and nasty (such as the 'ghetto owners' that keep cropping up in comments), there are good owners who struggle with dogs that change at a moment's notice. I used to have the sweetest Chow Chow ever. She was adorable and kept this puppy-like outlook through her whole life. She loved our family and friends, and was real outgoing! But dang, she turned into a real beast around strangers... Just don't get confused. While your dog may be the sweetest dog you ever know and you're convinced that they would never bite anyone, you still can't take that chance. Strangers are strangers, and dogs will react in unpredictable ways.

Control your animals, and this would not happen. The officer done the right thing, just as anyone else in the same situation would have done. Simply owners are to blame regardless of the breed.

Some breeds are just mean. The PB is one. We had a Doberman when I was young. Great dog but, only listened to my dad. I went to kiss dad good night one evening and the dog, sitting next to dad, growled at me and showed his teeth. Dad got rid of the dog in the morning. I would have shot the dog also.

I bet the officer don't even have a mark i have only seen a hole in a pair of pants if a pitt bites and then continues to bite he would have needed more than rabies shots!

per the NC Court System. both were charged w/ mis. simple assualt however Giovanni has outstanding court dates for 1) 2 counts of DWLR 2) no operators license 3) Felony Poss.w/ intent to sell&deliver(marijuana) 4)Poss. Drug parapheralia 5) Poss Marijuana 1/2 to 1 oz. 6) Felony sell of marijuana 7) 2 count of felony Probation violation for Felony PWISD & drug paraphernalia. So that's why he turned to dog on the officer. and why was he even of the streets. Must have used drug money to bail his self out.

I hate how the media directs such negative feed towards pit bulls... if this were any other breed of dog then most likely it would not got a spot in the news. People need to realize how they are using the media to downgrade this amazing breed of dog and causeing a negative influence on the way society views the breed.

This story is not about shooting the dog as much as it is about the guy turning the dog on the officer. I doubt the dog just ran out the door after him. If that is the case he would have tried to stop him. He shut the door and let the dog continue to attack. The officer had no recourse. Its not about the Pitt. Its about the criminal. Its just stating a fact. No I don't agree with the headline. It could have just read dog and not Pit Bull. I still would have read it.
