Health officials in Carteret County say they found a dead rabid bat in two dogs' water bowl.
The Carteret County Health Department says residents returned to their home in the West Railroad Street area of Newport last Wednesday and found two dead bats floating in the water bowl. The bats were tested at the state lab and one came back positive for rabies.
Fortunately, both of the residents' dogs were up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.
Animal control says the owners were not sure if their dogs had played with the bats, or had any direct contact with them once they died. Out of precaution, the two dogs were given rabies booster shots.
If the dogs were not current on their shots their owners would have been required to quarantine the pets for six months at their own expense, or have them euthanized.
