Daycare Shuts Down With No Notice For Some Parents

A daycare center in the east closed its doors this week with little or no notice to parents or staff.

Many showed up to drop their kids off at The Children's House on Highland Drive in Washington Tuesday and found a sign saying the center was closed for good. Others got a call Monday night. No explanation has been given, and parents are now scrambling to make other arrangements.

"Normally I would be at work right now. So obviously that's a change, but without anyone to keep him I had to call into work and stay out. Daycares are few and far between sometimes, and waiting lists can be long."said mother Emma Shipley.

The owner, Carol Hofbauer of Illinois, could not be reached for comment. The center's director says she'll hold office hours from 2:00 -4:00 p.m. this week for parents to get their children's' records and any belongings left behind. She also says she is forwarding information to the owner so she can refund parents' money.

The owner is a coward...refuses to face/talk to parents and lets her director be her puppet!

Yep, I believe she knew that Friday according to my sources and she still let people pay for the following week/month. Then, they knew they were closing on Tuesday so tell me why they still put people's check through to the bank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is criminal. You call the PD and they say it is all civil and nothing criminal as of yet. What do you have to do for it to be criminal?? Taking people's money for the next weeks knowing that you are closed IS CRIMINAL! What is this world coming to?? We all need to get together and head up a law suit. I am sure there is a lawyer in town that would gladly take the case. They say we are not going to get our deposit back b/c that is in the contract. Yeah, it says non-refundable, and a two week notice, but we didn't get a two week notice and you don't think a month ago when they made off with $25 per child that they didn't know they were closing??? YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pissed!!!!!!!!!!

well maybe if she truly is so upset she shouldn't be helping hide information about the owner... she should stop working for free an try to get her money back to. because at this point she is the only one with a number to the owner... makes you wonder why she so helpful to the people who just took advantage of her as well as the rest of the parents....

To Anon on July 6 at 12:27 p.m. Mela has integrity, unlike the person she was working for. Maybe this is why she is at the Children's House working. Integrity will cause a person to do things that most people would call strange. The principles and ethics Mela holds helped her make the decision to not do to others what was done to her and many of the parents. Mela was committed to the children and parents, as well as to the placed she made her livelihood. Today, Mela is out of a job just like the other employees, but Mela holds to integrity and refuses to alter her beliefs and values in the face of conflicting discrepancy.

Ok we all agree it sucks what happened... However no one has said that Mela should change her beliefs or atleast I did not read that in any of these responses. Just a inside note no one works for free...

"Raise your own kids" - Be for real... Having your child/children in daycare doesn't mean YOU aren't raising them. Shame on you! You don't know how lucky you are to be able to afford to stay at home with yours!

I urge all parents and employees who were involved in this situation to post reviews on her other daycare centers to alert other parents of her conduct in NC. This is the only way she will be held accountable for her actions. A list of her other centers can be found at

To the ignorant folks who say things like "you need to raise your own kids" or "kids shouldn't be in daycares that look like this"...are you serious? Wow, some schools look WORSE than this! Also, obviously you are one of the parents who probably either a)are living off the assistance of the government and I am paying you to sit home while my kids are in daycare or 2)you live with parents, family, friends, etc... or even 3) your boyfriend/husband/significant other is working his/her rear-end of to take care of you and your kids! If you have the luxury of staying that, but don't knock those of us who choose to work. BTW: I send mine to daycare while working a job that pays $45,000 a year and my husbands runs our own business. I don't expect no one to raise mine!!

I currently dont work but when I did i relied on a babysitter or I wouldnt be able to are right though, if some people would get off their rears and go get a job they would realize you cant take your kids to work but if you HAVE to work you need someone to watch your children so you can afford to give them a good life.

Not mention the right daycare does wonders for kids socially and academically. SJ has no idea what he/she is talking about. I suspect this person doesn't have children and if he/she does, then those kids are the ones you don't want your kids around in school.

one doesn't have to have children to understand the economic and social need for daycare.

Get off your high horse Miss priss. You should be helping your husband, just because you have your own business doesn't mean it makes money. Get a life that is why your working. I stay at home and my husband does work no goverment help here misses! I don't mind daycare as long as its not used to put the kids up while the parents are not working for the beach for example. No way should people have to listen to snobs yappin away at their own "Self worth" which in real life is in no way as its described 99% of the time.
