David Garrard Golf Classic Tees Off In Greenville

NFL player David Garrard is back in Greenville to kick off his First Annual David Garrard Golf Classic.

The event will tee off at the Greenville Country Club Monday. The two-day event began with a live auction Sunday night.

The former ECU quarterback and current Jacksonville Jaguar is hosting the event to raise money for Beau's Buddies, a nonprofit that works to enrich the lives of those fighting cancer in Eastern Carolina.

Several NFL players, some with ECU ties, will be playing in the tournament.

I remember meeting David Garrard while I was a student at ECU, and can tell you he is a class act. He has been through a lot growing up with the passing away of his mom and with the illness he had. He's always been thoughtful and caring of other people and is blessed to have had the privilege to play in the NFL as a QB. He has what several others don't have the opportunity to do.

Remember Beau? I do. His time here was short, but the impact that that little boy has had is wonderful. Put aside your football comments, and think about the pain that Beau and his family went through that last year of his life. It's good to see that something to help so many has come from it. Thank you David Garrard for the help. Thank you to Beau's family for letting us all share Beau's story and doing something so wonderful for those in need during the worst time in their lives.

Garrard will have plenty of time to play golf once Blaine Gabbert takes over the starting QB job.

Hopefully he can join a team that provides him with an offensive line and receivers that someone has actually heard of.

Dave, Blane Gabbert sucks. He did'nt even do anything special at Missouri. I don't know why some of these people are so hyped up on him. David Garrard just about beat out my Pats who went 16-0 in the playoffs. After that game, I was glad my undefeated Pats won but also glad Garrard had a good game as a QB. The defense of the Jags is one of the worst in the league.

Great idea, glad to see Garrad giving back to the community. It would have been better to see it on a Saturday or Sunday, similar to how the Michael Jordan Golf Classic used to be. It tough for some to come out and support with the obligations of work and such on a Monday.

Hi Jeff- thanks for your comment and input on the timing of the event. We would LOVE to hold this event on a weekend! Unfortunately, Golf courses are reluctant to give up weekends (since they would have to close to their paying members) unless they know the magnitude of the event will be worth it. We aren't as big as the Michael Jordan Classic yet, but we certainly hope our very successful event helped move us in that direction! We appreciate your support!

David your doing a good thing with your Golf Classic. Have your ever talked to the troubled youth of Pitt County? Everyone is always saying they need a good role model, well you would be a GREAT one.

He has better things to do now, like make millions of dollars. The troubled youth of Pitt County need their PARENTS to talk to them, and most certainly discipline them.

It's the name I use to post. Again, if I wanted to be your buddy I'd tell you my real name. Don't get offended because I'm against a racist organization.
