Dare County Fire Brings Back Memories Of Evans Road Fire

As the fire in Dare County continues to burn, people in Washington County remember the Evans Road fire of 2008, which burned more 40,000 acres of land in Hyde, Washington, and Tyrrell Counties.

Lois Tetterton lives about six miles from where the Evans Road fire started, and says she was worried about losing her home back then. Luckily that didn't happen, but she says she'll always remember the red sky and heavy smoke in the area.

Like the Dare County fire now, smoke spread to several other counties in 2008, and air quality alerts were issued for many of them.

According to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge visitor services manager, the Pains Bay wildfire in Dare County has grown to more than 25,000 acres and is 75-percent contained.
