DOT Sets Ferry Tolls, Won't Charge New Rates Now

The state D.O.T. has set new tolls on ferry routes, but won't charge the new rates for now.

The proposed ferry rates unveiled Wednesday would charge pedestrians and vehicle passengers who now ride free on ferries. The boats already charge vehicles and their drivers.

The state budget adopted last year over Perdue's veto ordered DOT to start collecting fares on two toll-free river ferries used mostly by commuters, and to set higher rates on three routes where tolls are collected now.

The new rates were supposed to take effect next month, but Perdue ordered a one-year delay.

Tolls for the Cherry-Branch-Minnesott Beach route would have been $4 per car and a dollar more for each passenger.

For the Aurora-Bayview route, the costs were to be $10 per car and $2 more for each passenger.

A system-wide pass for cars would have cost $500 a year, while site specific passes for Cherry Branch-Minnesott would have run $150, and $200 for the Aurora-Bayview ferry route.

Transportation Department ferry officials expect they'll be told to collect the new tolls but it's not clear when.

This is what happens when you elect people who are from the north. The people riding the ferries are paying to travel on something they have already been taxed for. Mr. Cook you really messed up when you voted for this double taxation.

The Hatteras Ocracoke ferry run in the summer is dominated by tourists who are increasing the number of ferry runs and breaking the people of NC. They should be made to pay for their ride and anyone who has a ferry sticker on their car not be charged. They grumble if local people who pay taxes here get in the priorty line and ferry personnel are now taking sides with them. Make them pay!

The ferrys are part of our DOT. Funded for by our taxes. To implement a tax on one part system and not others is discrimitory. The Ferrys were originally installed to provide an economical transportation for those needing employment not for a joy ride.

Same reason you are paying for all the new roads in western NC. Your taxes are not only for roads you travel on but all roads and ferries. You can rest assured more of your money goes to roads you will never travel on than the ferries. Since ferry riders already pay through their taxes they are no more of a parasite than you are.

What's next? Toll roads between every town! The ferry system is suppose to be part of the road system, which our taxes pay for, shame on our politicians for letting this happen.

The ferries have always been part of the highway division. The people riding ferries have already paid to ride them the same as a driver has paid to drive on a highway. To toll a N.C. citizen is double charging. N.C. citizens better beware. What do you think they will do next? None of us are immune to their underhanded tactics. Next may be a toll on the new bypass around Washington. After all, the state is broke and it has to be paid for someway. You use it, you pay. Sound fair?

Stop paying our state "officials" these ridiculous for life pay checks and there will be no need to charge for ferry rides, and then the state officials can pay their own way just like us.

This is the best idea I have heard on this issue. when are we going to demand accountability and responsibility from our elected officials. They don't care what we think....they are going to do what they want.
