UPDATE: Brown Wins At Cutter Creek

Snow Hill, N.C. - July 17, 2011 - Brandon Brown shot a 4-under 68 in the final round of the Cutter Creek Golf Classic presented by Pepsi and won his third NGA/Hooters Tour event of the season.

Brown, of Shelbyville, Ky., finished with rounds of 71-63-68-68 for an 18-under 270 total and bested the field by five shots, earning $28,000.

“At the beginning of the season, I couldn’t have imagined this would be happening,” said Brown, an Eastern Kentucky alumnus. “I was playing well at the end of last season, but to win out here once is so tough with the amount of competition, much less three times.”

Although the margin of victory may indicate otherwise, Brown’s final round was anything but a cakewalk.

Brown, who started the day with a two-shot lead, bogeyed two of his first three holes and found himself in a three-way tie for the lead.

“I had to forget about it and remind myself that I was tied for the lead with 15 holes to play,” Brown said of the early hiccups. “On the fourth hole, I pulled my driver into the bunker, but I hit a 5-iron out of the bunker to about 20 feet on a back-right pin. I made a good par and kept it rolling.”

Indeed.

Brown played his final 14 holes 6-under par and pulled away from the field for his fourth career NGA/Hooters Tour victory.

“I had 11 bogeys this week, but I putted lights out,” said Brown, who moved to the top of the money list with over $110,000 in winnings. “Even in the first round, I thought I was playing well. I just needed to tighten it up. In the second round, I birdied 10 and 12, then I chipped in on the 13th. That really got me going.”

Brown finished the tournament with 27 birdies, one eagle and 11 bogeys.

Leroux Ferreira, of Kingwood, Texas, shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to move from T6 into a tie for second with Nick Rousey and Lee Williams. Ferreira, a former All-American at Midland (Texas) College, had seven birdies and three bogeys on Sunday. Ferreira finished at 13-under par to pick up his first top-five finish on the NGA/Hooters Tour.

Rousey, of Pensacola, Fla., continued his hot streak by shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish T2. In his last three events, Rousey, a former University of Alabama golfer, has a win, a T3 and T2 finish.

Williams, of Alexander City, Ala., also carded 3-under 69 on Sunday to move into a tie for second. While he has yet to win this season, Williams, a former Auburn All-American, does have seven top-10 finishes. Ferreira, Rousey and Williams all earned $10,295.

After starting the day in third place, Ryan Blaum (Coral Gables, Fla.) shot an even-par 72 and slipped into a tie for fifth with Robert Streb (Edmond, Okla.) and Reid Edstrom (Auburn, Ala.)

Ryan Spears (Del City, Okla.) recorded the round of the day, shooting a 7-under 65 moving from T30 into a tie for eighth with Andrew Loupe (Baton Rouge, La.), Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Columbia) and Patrick Wilkes-Krier (Orlando, Fla.). For full-field results, click here.

The NGA/Hooters Tour will return to action next week with the playing of the Heart Of North Carolina Golf Classic at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro, N.C.

Previous Story:
Snow Hill, N.C. - July 16, 2011 - After matching the course record with a 63 on Friday, Brandon Brown fired a 4-under 68 on Saturday to build a two-shot lead in the NGA/Hooters Tour’s Cutter Creek Golf Classic.

Brown, of Shelbyville, Ky., bogeyed his first hole of the day, but the Eastern Kentucky alumnus rebounded with four birdies to make the turn with a 3-under 33. After a birdie on No. 11, Brown made back-to-back bogeys on holes Nos. 12 and 13 before rallying with two late birdies to put himself in good position for a Tour-leading third victory of the year. After three rounds, Brown is 14-under par.

Former Ball State standout Patrick Wilkes-Krier shot a 3-under 69 in the third round to move from T4 to solo second. Wilkes-Krier, of Orlando, Fla., is the only golfer in the field to have three rounds in the 60s, posting rounds of 69-66-69 for a 12-under 204 total.

Ryan Blaum, a former Duke Blue Devil, is three shots off the lead after posting a 1-under 71 on Saturday. Blaum, of Coral Gables, Fla., was tied for second late in the round, but a bogey on the final hole dropped him to 11-under for the tournament.

Nick Rousey, of Pensacola, Fla., matched the low round of the day with a 5-under 67 and moved from T14 into a tie for fourth at 10-under par. Rousey, a former University of Alabama golfer, has four top-10 finishes, including a win, in his last six NGA/Hooters Tour starts.

Lee Williams, who has one win on the NGA/Hooters Tour, is also 10-under par and T4 after three rounds of play. Williams, of Alexander City, Ala., had three birdies and two bogeys on Saturday en route to a 1-under 71.

Manuel Villegas, the younger brother of PGA standout Camilo Villegas from Medellin, Columbia, shot a 4-under 68 to move from T14 to into a tie for sixth with Leroux Ferreira (Kingwood, Texas) and Reid Edstrom (Auburn, Ala.).

Hernan Piri Borja (Coral Springs, Fla.), Derek Rende (Soddy Daisey, Tenn.), and Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) finished the third round at 8-under par and tied for ninth.

Robert Streb (Edmond, Okla.), Andrew Loupe (Baton Rouge, La.), Santiago Rivas (Cali, Columbia), Kevin Larsen (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Kyle Ellis (Senatobia, Miss.) and 2010 PGA Tour member Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio) are T12 and 7-under par entering Sunday’s final round.

After holding the lead for two rounds, Jason Cuthbertson, of Conway, Ark., slipped to T12 with a 4-over 76 on Saturday. For full-field results, click here.

The final round of the Cutter Creek Golf Classic presented by Pepsi will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. As always, admission is free to the public.

Previous Story:
Snow Hill, N.C. - A day after setting the course record with a 9-under 63 at Cutter Creek Golf Club, Jason Cuthbertson shot a 2-under 70 on Friday to maintain control of the NGA/Hooters Tour Cutter Creek Golf Classic heading into the weekend.

Cuthbertson, of Conway, Ark., started the day with a two-shot lead, but the University of Arkansas alumnus ran into trouble early in the second round. Cuthbertson bogeyed three of his first seven holes before rallying with four birdies over his final 10 holes to finish at 11-under par for the tournament and keep the outright lead in the $200,000 event.

Brandon Brown, who has two wins this season, matched Cuthberston’s course record with a 63 of his own on Friday. Brown, of Shelbyville, Ky., birdied his first hole of the day and stayed hot, shooting a front-side 30 and moving to 10-under par for the day with an eagle on his 14th hole. Unfortunately for Brown, a bogey on his final hole of the day left him one shot out of the lead and tied for the course record.

Although he hasn’t set any records this week, former Duke Blue Devil Ryan Blaum has stayed within earshot of the leader with rounds of 65 and 69. Blaum, of Coral Gables, Fla., is 10-under par after two rounds and tied for second with Brown.

Patrick Wilkes-Krier, of Orlando, Fla., made a nice move up the leaderboard with a 6-under 66 in the second round. After starting the day T15, Wilkes-Krier moved into a tie for fourth with Lee Williams (Alexander City, Ala.) and Jim Troy (Orlando, Fla.) at 9-under par.

Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.), Derek Rende (Soddy Daisey, Tenn.) and Reid Edstrom (Auburn, Ala.) are T7 at 8-under par, while Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio), Jeff Dennis (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Leroux Ferreira (Kingwood, Texas) are T10 and 7-under par.

The third round of the Cutter Creek Golf Classic will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. As always, admission is free to the public.
