Crews Contain Fire In Croatan National Forest

A fire that flared up Sunday in the Croatan National Forest and private property near Havelock has been fully contained, according to the NC Division of Forest Resources.

District Manager Ned Berg says the fire is about two miles down Catfish Lake Rd. into the forest. Berg says the fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Crews responded quickly to plow containment lines, and the fire is fully contained. However, it is not under control. Crews returned Monday morning to reinforce the containment lines in order to better ensure the fire does not jump the containment lines.

Berg says the Forestry Service is working seven days a week to make sure crews are available to quickly respond to fires, as was the case with the fire in Craven County Sunday.

It's not clear what started this fire. Berg says it's under investigation whether lightning is the culprit or whether it was intentionally set.
