A husband and wife were arrested after deputies say their son-in-law was shot and daughter assaulted Saturday night over chopping firewood.
Carteret County deputies have charged Robert Debruhl with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault on a female.
Deputies say an argument over cutting firewood on the front porch of Debruhl's home on Howard Road after Saturday's snowstorm led to a physical fight and eventual shooting.
They say the victims, Daniel and Ashley Eakes, retreated to their bedroom when Debruhl fired two shots from a .357 handgun, one which hit the son-in-law in the leg. The daughter was pistol whipped during the attack.
Also charged was Malissa Debruhl for allegedly ripping the phone from her step-daughter's hands while she was trying to call 911.
Daniel Eakes was sent to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Robert Debruhl's bond was set at $60,000 while Malissa Debruhl's bond was $300.
