Congestion Expected On New Bern's Twin Span Bridge

Drivers in New Bern should consider taking a detour to avoid congestion expected on the twin span bridge. A bridge painting project is scheduled for eastbound lanes of the US 70 Bridge in New Bern.

The project is scheduled to run from Wednesday at 7 a.m. through Saturday at 9 a.m. Two of three lanes will be closed to traffic during the painting project.

The NCDOT is recommending drivers use Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to avoid the congestion from the lane closures.

You'd do better during "rush hour" times to detour thru town. The Pembroke/Trent Woods overpass was done earlier this week, and at 6 pm it was a MESS! The signs were up before the 17/mall exit and many drivers were in such an itchin' hurry to zoom past and use the left lane to get ahead of everyone else.

It would help if they would put up one of those marqui-type signs to slow traffic down to say, 45MPH. I got caught running out of right-hand lane by orange traffic cones, the other day, and couldn't get out because the other drivers were still driving 65 on the left. There was no sign up either saying "bridge-work ahead; merge left".

Ah, you just go down BROAD street to the Cunningham bridge --- OOPS, it isn't BROAD any more, it is now NARROW Alley (thanks to the stupidity of the old city council) - get ready for major traffic jams.

I sure hope that they do not forget to paint the bike lanes on the bridge so that everyone can pass over it safely and quickly.

Thanks Clint. The article is definitely misleading for a lot of travelers.

MLK does not cross the river. You'll have to go down town and use the new draw bridge. You might do as well, time wise,to go through the traffic.

"The NCDOT is recommending drivers use Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to avoid the congestion from the lane closures." So will this detour get me on the other side of New Bern heading to Havelock for the beach?
