Confederate National Flag Stirs Emotions In Downtown Kinston

The second national flag of the Confederate States of America flies in downtown Kinston, and some people aren't too happy about it.

"I think it's very offensive to some people, including myself," says Judiea Ruffin of Kinston. "I think it shouldn't be flying like that, I feel it's wrong."

The flag is flying atop the CSS Neuse II, a replica of the ironclad battleship that was built in Kinston during the Civil War. The white flag has the stars and bars in the upper left corner. It's widely know as the "stainless banner" and not a symbol of racism, according to the CSS Neuse II Foundation.

John Nix says the Confederate flag associated with hatred is the battle flag. "I understand the sensitivity, but that flag (the battle flag) has been used in the wrong way and it gets that connotation because it's been used as a symbol of hatred and that's not what it's about at all. It happens to be the flag used in battle," Nix told WITN.

The replica of the CSS Neuse was built from the outside in, to resemble the way the ship would looked back during the war. The foundation says they wanted their ship to be an exact copy of the actual ironclad, even down to the flag.

"We need to remember where we came from and remember the mistakes in the past. so we don't repeat them," said Nix.

The only difference I see between them and the NAACP is that the NAACP still has a large presence... I am surprised they have not called Jesse or Al into Kinston to protest and demand money for something...

Hate for this only shows ignorance. The klan never piloted ironclads... this a historic representation, all the fire spiting about the flag is irrelevant and a waste of breath... the klan is dead... until post 1960s they rarely used a confederate battle flag.

Enough already! In all of history there are many flags used in battle that offended someone. In more recent history how about the Japanese flag or the Nazi flag? Should the Japanese do away with their national flag because it reminds someone of the atrocities committed by the Japanese in WWII or should the Nazi Flag be removed from historical displays because of the atrocities committed by the Nazis in WWII? How about the Russian flag? How about our current US flag? Once you get started you would never stop! If something 150 years old is offensive to a modern day human being, then perhaps they do not have enough in their lives in the 21st century to occupy their time. It is destructive to not remember lessons learned and uplifting and inspirational to focus on progress made in the history of mankind. Get a life! Celebrate our progress as a nation and work for continuing improvement in our society for the future of our children.

Hate to break it to you but just because you passed the 5th grade doesn't make you well-educated.

you got the computer to work that you and Jethro found at the dump doesn't entitle you to an opinion. Your belief system is wrong, but your education pedigree already tells us that. Some christian school in your hayseed town doesn't qualify. Stop preaching hate.

"...doesn't entitle you to an opinion." "Stop preaching hate." Pot calling the kettle black, don't you think? Just because someone's opinion is different than yours, doesn't mean they aren't entitled to one, hypocrite.

Get over yourself! It appears that you have some serious entitlement issues... In case you forgot, we are all equal in 2012. Oh, and you should be thankful that there are christian schools in this area given the poor shape of our public education system. Personally, I do not want my children sitting in class next to a known drug dealer on one side, someone 19 and in the 9th grade on the other, behind someone who robbed an ATM machine the previous night and in front of someone who is a known gang member.

Your schools reflect the population.. It's not our fault you chose to live in a poor, underdeveloped, morally corrupt county. The fact that you live there demonstrates you're lagging behind others in terms of education, jobs, and opportunity. To top it all off - you want to spend the little extra time you do have complaining about an insignificant flag. Go figure......

I will decline to respond to you personal insult regarding my decision to live in beautiful eastern NC. You must live here in this "poor, underdeveloped, morally corrupt" area as well given you are following a news channel for this area so get over yourself and your entitlement attitude. Move away! If you don't live here then get your nose out of our business. You don't deserve any special treatment and I personally rather have "Jethro at the dump" as a neighbor than you. The flag is not insignificant and is a part of our history in this area. Why even keep the CSS Neuse? Because it is history and we need to remember it accurately!

Hope you don't have to ever go to a physician in Eastern NC. Chances are good they are one of your "hicks" who graduated from ECU's medical school which is ranked 10th in the nation for primary care. I would definitely hate to trust my health care to someone who graduated from a medical school like this... You are just bitter. Eastern NC is not perfect, but there are many places worse to live in this country...

Did they not teach anything about the Confederacy in the public schools, or were they afraid of offending someone? I was taught about it at a very conservative Christian school and they tried to shelter the students from everything. In fact, sex ed wasn't taught until 10th grade. History is history and can't be altered. Those that oppose flying the flag need to get over it and move on with their lives. You're in the South and will see plenty flying. You don't have to fly one yourself.
