Condemnation Concerns For Some Greenville Residents

Greenville officials are setting the record straight after several phone calls from citizens concerned their property might be on a condemnation list.

The city reports several residents say they've received letters stating their property has been "authorized for condemnation" for a road project.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is working to get the property and rights necessary for the 10th Street Connector project.

The city reports condemnation is a last resort, and that no property has been condemned. The city also reports some citizens who have received letters should not have.

If you have any questions, you are asked to call Ed Eatmon of NC-DOT at (252) 439-2812.

The city's media advisory is below.

DATE: September 4, 2012
SUBJECT: Misleading Letters re: 10th Street Connector
CONTACT: Scott Godefroy, 329-4522

The City of Greenville has received several calls from residents who have received letters stating that their property has been authorized for condemnation for the 10th Street Connector road project.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is under contract with Telics to acquire property necessary for the road, rights of way, and utility easements for the future construction of the 10th Street Connector. In the process of acquiring right of way and easements, condemnation is a last resort. As the acquisition process is just getting underway, NO PROPERTIES HAVE BEEN CONDEMNED.

Furthermore, some of the letters are being sent to people whose property are not within the project scope and are not under consideration for being acquired.

Should residents have questions about the process and the letters, please contact Ed Eatmon (NCDOT) at (252) 439-2812.
