Community Organizer and ECU Student Running For State House

Uriah Ward, a senior graduating from ECU in the fall of 2014, announced his intention to run for North Carolina House District 9 in Pitt County on the Democratic ticket.

Ward, a Greenville native, is a Political Science major with a minor in Business at East Carolina University.

Uriah is a current member of the NC Grange and was a co-founder and former President of a local chapter. He was also one of the first people ever appointed to the Greenville Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission and eventually served as its Chair-Elect in 2012.

Here's what Ward had to say in making his announcement:

"Hello, my name is Uriah Ward and I was born right here in Greenville, North Carolina. I'm a community organizer and activist that has worked against the radical policies of our current state legislature. We have seen a decreased emphasis on public education. We've watched as guns have been allowed in bars, on playgrounds and on our school campuses. This legislature refused the Medicaid expansion that would have helped thousands of struggling families. They've cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires while cutting unemployment benefits for people who have been unable to find jobs in our slowly recovering economy. We are a state of common-sense forward-thinking solutions, not a state of ideologues. We have watched together as extreme legislation has been passed and implemented and North Carolinians know that this is not who we are. We don't just open doors for strangers at the store, we open doors for all of our children by providing them an affordable, quality education. That is who we are. We cherish the 2nd amendment but recognize that there are commonsense precautions that can make us safer. That is who we are. We may go to church on Sunday but Monday through Friday we're leading national discussions on policy, science and philosophy. That is who we are. Our medical and educational institutions may be elite but they are not elitist. We support our businesses while also making investments to improve our quality of life. We are the first in flight and we refuse to be the last in education. We are a great state and we must once again return to thoughtful, moderate leadership because that is who we are and that is what works. My name is Uriah Ward and I'm running for state house, because this is North Carolina, and that still means something to me."

The District 9 seat is currently held by first term Republican Brian Brown.
