A 70-year-old man who was reported overdue from a fishing trip was found safe this morning.
The U.S. Coast Guard says they initially got a phone call last night from the man's wife saying the man had not returned from a fishing trip near the Wright Memorial Bridge.
He was found okay around 7:20 a.m. by the Coast Guard near Powells Point in Currituck County.
The Coast Guard says at first they tried to contact the man via marine band radio and then through his cell phone. They then contacted his cell phone company which directed them to search the North River.
The man told authorities that he beached his 14-foot jon boat and slept in it through the night, rather than risk running out of fuel while en route to the boat ramp.
