Civil Jury Decides Against US Senate Hopeful

A jury has decided U.S. Senate candidate Greg Brannon gave false and misleading statements to two people while investing in a startup technology company, meaning he is liable for more than $250,000.

Jurors deliberated over two days in the civil case before reaching their decision Tuesday in Wake County Superior Court.

Two investors had accused Brannon and the company's former CEO of giving bad information to them about Verizon's interest in a mobile phone application. The jury absolved ex-CEO Robert Rice of wrongdoing in the civil trial.

Brannon was a company director in Neogence Enterprises. He is one of at least six Republicans seeking the party's nomination in May and the chance to take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.

Brannon said in a statement after the verdict that he'll appeal.
