City officials say a person was robbed outside of Eppes Recreation Center on Nash St. in Greenville Sunday. A police report says a man was robbed of a computer, which city spokesman Steve Hawley says was a laptop.

WITN earlier reported there was a robbery of the rec center, based on information in a Greenville police report. Hawley clarified the robbery took place outside. The rec center was closed at the time.

Maybe the robber couldn't read the "No Firearms" sign because he is illiterate. If he could have read the sign, he would not have carried the gun onto municipal property. He will be tried and receive probation or a light sentence and become a good law-abiding citizen. I should have been a judge.

Signs tha tprohibit carry of firearms ONLY serve to disarm the law-abiding and the honest. Criminals and thugs are going to carry anytime and anywhere they please--regardless of some silly "gun-buster" sign tha tth ecity may post. Signs prohibiting carry ONLY serve to create "defenseless victim zones", and a target-rich environment for criminals. WAKE UP, people...

Too bad. If the individual who was robbed in "an open public space" had done his recreating in Washington he would not have had this problem. Washington has a policy (AND has even posted SIGNS to the effect) that bans anyone (you know, like law abiding citizens trained in hand gun safety) from carrying a concealed weapon in a recreation area. Hey Sir Robbee, come over to our town and you will be safe from being robbed in an "open public space", the signs say so!

LOL! USN Vet, you are a wise man, but unfortunately, the majority of the people on this site don't have the mental capacity to grasp subtle irony or satire. And the Washington City government does not have the ability to understand that criminals DON'T OBEY THE LAW, so these silly signs ONLY serve to endanger law-abiding citizens. When will people in NC wake up? Those of us who ARE awake (like you and I) are far to few in this state. NC needs far FEWER sheep, and a LOT more sheep-dogs...

It would have been funny if it had been a desktop he was carrying...monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, too! LMAO

Its sad that this is no more than a couple of blocks from the police station they have set up on 5th street. Hey wasn't this the same guy that was considered the most feared man in Greenville? If not I see that he was listed in jail bookings for an armed robbery. Way to go! Let him off on murder charges and not even six months later he's back to his old tricks. Come on WITN give us an update. I want to see if my calculations are correct.

Too much money is being spent in this part of town with little to nothing to show for it except a few select people getting rich off taxpayers expense.

Is this the "batting cage" rec center by the railroad tracks that is located close to Pizza Inn and Parkers BBQ?

no. This is located on west 5th street, closer to Memorial Drive/Hospital etc. The police & community have worked very hard to clean this area up. Construction projects redid the sidewalk, parking lots, and playground in the last year or so. Have taught a few exercise classes at this facility. Not bad place, just older.

The City of Washington says this will be prevented by banning all guns from this type of property, guess Greenville should do the same. If a ban on guns had been in effect for this city property, this would not have happed, right?

But guns are not allowed there, so it couldn't have happened. We need more and bigger No Weapons signs, right? Now go read the article and comments on the City of Washington banning CCW...

Well this guy should be arrested for violating the CCW signs. Let him off of the robbery, we are sure he didn't mean it, but fine him and throw him in jail for ignoring the signs....I caught the story....keeping the law abiding citizens from going into parks when no criminal will ever observe the signs....we get it, open season on park users in Washington!
