BEAUFORT COUNTY: Evacuation Orders, Curfews

Due to the extreme conditions created by Hurricane Irene, outages are widespread throughout the City of Washington�s electric service area. City crews have restored power to more than 9,500 customers. City crews are working diligently to ensure that power is restored to the remaining 4,000 customers; however, outages may extend for several days. Outages should be reported to 252-975-9320.

The City of Washington Sanitation Department will pick up storm debris that is left curbside. The collection process will begin once all roads within the City have been cleared.

During the Hurricane Irene recovery period, the City of Washington encourages its residents to beware of scams and price gouging. The City encourages all residents to check for proper licenses and insurance from all potential contractors to combat possible fraud.]

A list of licensed contractors will be available at City Hall in the Customer Service department beginning Monday, August 29.

City crews continue to work diligently to restore all services in a safe and timely manner. The City asks for your patience as we recover from the devastation of Hurricane Irene.

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Washington and Beaufort County.

The county defines low lying areas as any area where residents are required to purchase flood insurance or areas where residents have had flooding or rising water in past rain or wind events.

There is a voluntary evacuation order for the rest of Washington.

A curfew will take effect in Washington at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, just after midnight on Friday night.

Shelters are open at PS Jones Middle School and Washington High School beginning at 6 p.m.
