Chief: Fire Causes Extensive Damage To Home

A house fire tore through a home in Washington Thursday afternoon. Washington and Bunyan fire departments responded 112 Slatestone Road around 12:45.

Washington Fire Chief Robbie Rose says heavy smoke was showing as crews arrived. His fire fighters described it as thick brown smoke pouring out from under the length of the roof.

Chief Rose says conditions were right for 'back draft" since there was so much heat and smoke, and all the doors and windows were shut. The first thing fire fighters did was open the door to let the home ventilate. Then then knocked down the flames. Crews later cut into the roof of the brick home to let more heat and smoke out.

Rose says the fire caused extensive damage throughout the home, but especially in the kitchen. No one was in the home when fire fighters arrived.

Fire fighters are expected to remain on scene for some time to watch for hot spots and try to locate the owners.
