Cherry Hospital Director Resigns

A troubled state mental hospital is once again looking for a new director. The state announced Friday that Philip Cook is leaving Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro on August 30th.

Cook, who has been at Cherry since April 2009, says he will return to the private health care industry.

In March federal investigators cited Cherry after an escape of a young patient. That was the latest problem at the psychiatric hospital, back in 2010 Cherry was cited after staff members were videotaped putting a pillow over a patient's face and for using improper force and in 2008 the hospital lost its certification after a patient died when he was left sitting in a chair for nearly a day without food.

Construction is already underway for a new $138 million replacement facility for Cherry, while the state says it will now begin the search for a new director.
