After several recent dog attacks on people and the growing animal population, one local animal shelter will no longer be under the health department's umbrella.
Onslow County Commissioners voted to make the Onslow County Animal Control Shelter its own department. The department will include an animal cruelty investigator to work with law enforcement to identify and help prosecute cases of animal neglect or brutality, and coordinate volunteers.
County commissioners says the change would cost $41,000 for the rest of the fiscal year then $99,000 dollars each subsequent year.
