Officials are getting an early start on ceremonies marking the 107th anniversary of the first powered flight on the North Carolina coast.
The First Flight Society begins the observance Friday morning by placing wreaths at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Historian Darrell Collins will place the wreaths, as well as tell the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright. There will also be a fly-over tribute.
Samford University professor Julie Hedgepeth Williams, who authored a book on the Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Ala., will speak at the society's annual meeting.
Last week, Gov. Beverly Perdue issued a proclamation recognizing the role of aviation and aerospace in North Carolina.
