Carteret County Schools assistant superintendent Mat Bottoms says the district could be facing a $4 million budget short fall.
In the past 2 years Bottoms says the Carteret County School district has lost 60 staff members through attrition, but with the Govenor's recent school budget cut projections the district may be forced to cut more than 100 staff members including teachers and teacher assistants.
The district may also face cuts in AP classes and athletics. Bottoms says he's never seen a budget gap like this in his career.
"The budget talks are going at a feverish pace right now. Even though we don't have all the information that we need, we're trying to plan for every scenario that might come to us. We're trying to be smart and get in front of things, but we don't have all the pieces to the puzzle at this time," said Bottoms.
Bottoms says it could take until this summer to finalize the school's budget .
