Carteret County Schools Facing Possible $4 Million Shortfall, Teacher Cuts

Carteret County Schools assistant superintendent Mat Bottoms says the district could be facing a $4 million budget short fall.

In the past 2 years Bottoms says the Carteret County School district has lost 60 staff members through attrition, but with the Govenor's recent school budget cut projections the district may be forced to cut more than 100 staff members including teachers and teacher assistants.

The district may also face cuts in AP classes and athletics. Bottoms says he's never seen a budget gap like this in his career.

"The budget talks are going at a feverish pace right now. Even though we don't have all the information that we need, we're trying to plan for every scenario that might come to us. We're trying to be smart and get in front of things, but we don't have all the pieces to the puzzle at this time," said Bottoms.

Bottoms says it could take until this summer to finalize the school's budget .

Local taxes do not begin to cover the expense of schools. Much of the money comes from the state and fed. government-teachers are state employees. When the state cuts funds to education-it directly effects each local system. But don't worry, NC millionaires are doing fine and the GOP is fighting right now to lower their tax rate even further!

With all of the seasonal homeowners paying taxes how are we as a county short of funds...Show me the money and where does it go???? We are fed up with shortfalls..teachers and students are always the first to suffer. This situation will fall on the already burdened taxpayer. Buckle up it appears it is going to be big cuts. With the cuts that are anticipated in education the unemployment rate will rise significantly. Cuts need to occur at the top and not in the classroom.

I find this most puzzling. I thought the lottery was going to save us all. Not a day goes by when i do not see a poor person usually a minority buying a scratchoff ticket.
