A man in the east was sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest Friday afternoon after police say his mother-in-law's boyfriend shot him.
Carteret County Deputies say 62-year-old Earl Baker of Sam Garner Road in Newport is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. About 3:45 this afternoon deputies responded to the house in response to a 911 call that a man had been shot in the chest and the shooter was still armed inside the residence. Deputies quickly got the 41-year-old victim Kevin Nolan to an ambulance and Baker was taken into custody after law enforcement swarmed the area.
Investigators say Baker and Nolan both live at the home and got into a fight about disciplining Nolan's 13 year old child. Nolan, his wife, and two children were temporarily living there with Nolan's mother-in-law who is in a relationship with Baker.
The victim was transported from Carteret General Hospital to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he remained in stable condition Friday night with a single gunshot wound to the chest from a .22 caliber rifle. The round contained between 20 and 40 small
Baker remained in the Carteret County Jail Friday under a $75-thousand dollar bond.
