Cape Hatteras Turtle Nests On Record Pace

The number of sea turtle nests on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore could set a record this year.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported that 219 nests have been found this year. That's just three short of the 2012 record.

Park spokeswoman Cyndy Holda says turtles are still coming on the 60 miles of beach so the total could set a record.

Holda says nests were found between May 11 and Aug. 26 last year.

Officials say 722 eggs have hatched from the 7,300 eggs laid on the park's beaches.

Biologist Matthew Godfrey with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says officials don't know why the number of nests is increasing.

Godfrey said officials have found nearly 1,100 nests across the state, just short of the 1999 record.
