Two more people are in the U.S. Senate race, and U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger of Charlotte now has a primary opponent as North Carolina's candidate filing period ends.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Mark Martin also got a surprising challenge from Superior Court Judge Ola Lewis to become the next chief justice as the candidate deadline for political parties and judicial seats ended at midday Friday. Martin and Lewis are registered Republicans, all but assuring a GOP justice will now lead the state court system. No registered Democrat filed for the job.
Democrat Ernest Reeves and Republican Alex Bradshaw filed for the Senate. Now, 12 people from three parties are running to try to take incumbent Kay Hagan's Senate seat.
Pittenger now faces a fellow Republican in Mike Steinberg.
