A marine is trying to recover from what troopers describe as massive head injuries, after a bad crash on a dirt bike.
The Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Cory Brooks, a Camp Lejeune marine, was not wearing a helmet when his dirt bike crashed into a tree.
It happened around 1:30 Sunday afternoon off Highway 53 near Harris Creek Road. Brooks was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with massive head injuries.
Sgt. T.C. Wells says Brooks was riding his dirt bike alone in a wooded area on private property. There will be no charges in the case.
