Beloved Umpire, "Coach Coburn " Dies

A Pitt county man, honored last year for his service to his community, has died.

Charles Coburn, known to many as Coach Coburn" spent 41 years as an umpire in Pitt county. He started his career as a umpire after losing his arm in the Vietnam War.

He was awarded several medals, including the prestigious Purple Heart for his service in combat in Vietnam.

In March of 2012, his umpire number was retired in the Gymnasium at Pitt Community College which bares his name.

Coburn's son, Cameron, posted on Facebook that just after 12:00PM Thursday, his father passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Charles Coburn was 65-year-old, just a few weeks shy of his 66th birthday.

Funeral arrangements are set for Sunday, Feb. 24, 1:30-3pm.
Visitation, Rouse's Funeral Home in LaGrange.

The Funeral service immediately following at 3pm in the funeral home chapel.

Burial immediately following funeral at the LaGrange local cemetery.
