State Senator Clark Jenkins has introduced a bill in the Senate to help Bear Grass Charter School get the facility they need in order to open up by this fall.
The Bill requests the Martin County School Board to offer a lease to purchase to Former Bear Grass School to the town for the newly enacted Charter School.
The school building has been empty since the school system consolidated back in 2009, taking students out of the school and placing them in other schools in the county.
The Martin County Superintendent, Ron Melchiorre, says this bill is an attempt to take the rights away from school board members, who have the elected duty to make the decision on school board property and have been deadlocked.
Melchoirre says they plan to use the old Bear Grass school facility for the Martin Success Academy, a program to help at-risk students from dropping out of school.
The Bear Grass Charter School Administrators say they have 227student applications at this time and space for 300 students in its first year .
The school plans to open on August 27th, but if they can't provide proof of occupancy, their charter will be revoked by the state and they'll have to start the charter process again.
