A high school student in Bertie County decided on a hairy senior project to help cancer survivors

17-year-old Sierra Jernigan is excited about graduating Bertie Early College High School soon, but she had 15 service hours to complete for her senior project first. She says she was inspired by both her parents who are cancer survivors, to help other survivors who are hair-challenged by collecting hair for Locks Of Love. Locks of Love is a non-profit which provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

Jernigan held a Locks of Love drive at the Gymboree children's store in Aulander this weekend. Saturday she cut and collected 4 pony tails. She's collected 6 more since then for a total of ten.

Jernigan says she knows what it feels like to be different because she has worn hearing aids since she was four years old. She says if you would like to donate your hair to Locks of Love, she will be happy to cut and collect it. You can reach her at: sljernigan95@bertie.k12.nc.us.
