Beaufort County Schools Closed Through Labor Day

Schools in Beaufort County will be closed through Labor Day as officials still access damage from Hurricane Irene.

The school system says a tentative plan is for students to return to class on September 6th, but even that could be delayed.

Significant damage was sustained to the Beaufort County Ed Tech Center, Bath Elementary School gymnasium and the Chocowinity Middle School gymnasium.

The school system says other schools saw more minor damage from winds and rain.

From Beaufort County Schools:

Staff and area officials are currently accessing damages to Beaufort County School campuses and facilities left in the wake of Hurricane Irene. School will be closed again on Wednesday, August 31. The school system will make daily announcements via the Alert Now call system and local media to update the public on damages and the eventual re-opening of regular operations.

Alert Now calls will be sent to all student contact numbers given the fact many people have only cellular service at this time. For those with power, the Beaufort County Schools website will be another hub of information.

Significant damage was sustained to the Beaufort County Ed Tech Center, Bath Elementary School gymnasium and the Chocowinity Middle School gymnasium. Other campuses saw more minor damage from winds and rain. Crews from the BCS Maintenance Department began clean up operations Sunday.

The public is asked to only venture on to campuses if you are there as a part of a clean-up operation guided by school officials. If so, please only go into areas deemed safe by school leaders.

Any decisions regarding the re-opening of classes will be made taking into account the state of the county as a whole, including power and water availability. Please keep in mind Beaufort County has a large geographic area which varies greatly from end to end. Conditions in your area may seem safe, however; may not have improved in other areas.
