Beaufort County School Board Chairman Steps Down

Changes are on the way for the Beaufort County School Board as the board chairman announced he is stepping down.

Robert Belcher says he will resign from his post as Chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Education as of August 16, the next board meeting.

In a letter to the school board and superintendent, dated July 19, Belcher talks mostly about strife between the school board and the Beaufort County Commissioners. "I cannot in good conscience any longer sit across the table and negotiate from a position of weakness with the county commissioners. Pleading and begging are not strengths for me," Belcher wrote. "Therefore I tender to you my letter of resignation as chairman of the school board."

Belcher will continue to serve his term on the school board as the representative of his district until November 2012.

What a town and county. A place where ignorance, rudeness and self interest rule the day. Our only hope is to throw Richardson and Deatherage off the Board of Commissioners and the Mayor and Doug (the real Mayor like the Wizard pulling strings in the land of Oz) Mercer out of City Council - Mercer especially. He treats city employees with total disrespect (unless they're are part of the old boy gang) and has no regard for the average citizen. He hides behind the far right agenda of cutting spending at ALL costs including back room deals to replace The WPD, the arts, education (*we have three elementary schools with failing "No Child Left Behind. This whole county is left behind - adults throwing children off roof tops, weekly charges of sex crimes, the city can't provide 24/7 electricity, yet the charge premium rates. And, before you bother to comment, trying desperately to move ASAP.

Belcher...stick to you beliefs. Don't let the Commissioners get their way. Speak you mind. Call them out. There are to many issues that are kept secretive. Stay there and let the citizens now what really goes on behind closed doors. The WDN does not let us know what the real issues are for our schools.

I wish our chair how the fortitude to step down - different reasons, one to set an example, one to admit his failure to set an example - but all in the best interest of our children.

Mr. Belcher stepped down only to have a vote in issues that do not go the way he wants them to go...there is a small number of Board Members as well as Commissioners who have nothing but their OWN interest and agenda in mind. Your school board has brought in a superintendent that will not rock the boat, and that's what they wanted...someone they could control. Until new board members and county commissioners are put into office, the status quo is what we will continue to have!

Hood = The county commissioner that received the highest number of votes during the last election.... by far. I wonder why that is? Maybe your viewpoint is the minority??

It is Beaufort Counties backwards election system that keeps getting those bozos elected. Remember a few years ago when Stan declared he was going to change the method of voting in commissioners in Beaufort County? That didn't last long, did it?

Belcher,Keep your position!! Stop trying to be politically correct and call those two clowns out. It amazes me, how people in this county reelect Hood and Stan. I believe in conservatism, but those two are clowns. They are mentally stuck in the 40's.

Mr. Belcher, I feel your pain. Many School Boards in NC have less than favorable relationships with their County Commissioners, especially when it's budget time. However, what signal does that send to your board, administrators, staff, and teachers? When the going gets tough, QUIT? I think not. I think there are other means of getting the attention of the Commissioners. Politics can be frustrating, demanding, and down right hurtful at times. But you have to remember that it's not about the School Board, or the Board Members, or the's all about the kids.

Mr. Belcher, we have 12 people on our school board (Pitt County)that have failed and embarrassed us many times. I don't know the number Beaufort County has, but 4 is enough, it works for the largest school system in NC which is Wake Couny. Hang in there, the people have heard you. Hang your head HIGH, the folks are proud of you and your work. POPPA
