The Beaufort County sheriff's office says an inmate has been charged with malicious conduct for spitting on a detention officer
Deputies say they responded to an unruly inmate earlier this month in the Beaufort County Detention Center.
They say 23-year-old William Jefferson had taken off his clothing and smeared feces on himself and in the detention cell.
They say Jefferson continuously beat on the walls and door of the cell.
Deputies removed him from the cell and secured him in a restraint chair.
A Detention Officer was assigned to monitor him for safety purposes when they say he spit on the officer.
Jefferson was originally jailed on charges of stealing a gun and checks from a residence where he was living.
