Basnight Wants Money For Hyde County Lodge

Outgoing Senate leader Marc Basnight wants North Carolina's statewide elected leaders to keep repairing a historic lodge in his home district.

Basnight wrote Council of State members Thursday asking them to sign off on $3.3 million for Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge in Hyde County.

The council, comprised of Gov. Beverly Perdue and nine others, delayed this month borrowing $175 million for repair and renovation projects. Members said they're worried about more debt when the state faces budget problems.

Basnight said the state is obligated to renovate the lodge when the federal government gave it the property a few years ago. More than $5 million already has been spent on the project.

The Dare County Democrat says repairs will boost the region's economy, particularly through ecotourism.

This man is so crookied an investigation is in order!!! Beyond the Pork, Kin people and personal friends get the contracts. All the restaurant talk is true and more. However, the Worst thing he and his buddies lie about is the favoritism he has for Commercial fishermen, again his restaurant business etc. The gill nets and Fyke nets etc are completely destroying our Pamlico fishing grounds. Everyone knows they destroy the Trout, flounder, drum, white perch, yellow perch etc which are almost gone!!! The recreational fishermen keep paying the penalties and spending the monies for them. They will drestroy the last fish like they did in Currituck Co. The commercial boys in Currituck and Va. and Albermarle sound have moved to the Pamlico area to destroy it like they did in their own areas thanks to Mr. Basnight and others like him supporting the KILLER nets. All of us suffer because of Mr. Basnight and the liars in NC Government like him. He killed millions of fish and destroyed waters!

If I am not mistaken I think that using the lodge as a restaurant/lodge business is a conflict of interest; in violation of the Umstead Act. That act make it illegal for a government entity to to be in competition with private enterprise. I could be wrong...

No pun intended, but the fire at his Seafood restaurant was "fishy." As far as the Hyde County Lodge goes, instead of using tax dollars for its restoration, would'nt it be best for the Senator to use his influence to organize a fund raising project for it?

It is so sick the way to GREEDY people west of Hyde Co feel. The Greedy west has gotten everything they have always wanted for the last century. Actually,New Bern wasnt, good enough to be the capitol, so they moved it to Raleigh.Sucked up the tax money from the developed eastern NC at that time to build up the peidmont & west. Now they want to complain about it. Sharing the wealth is something the depressed areas in the east dont know much about until Senator Basnight had vision to help everyone.

"If the hog farmers can't come up with 200,000$ for the NC Democratic party they can eat hog waste" Mark Basnite's words, except for "waste". He used an explicative I can't say here. What a crook and I'm glad he's leaving. There's more to tell about his influence and abuse of power over Marine Fisheries, but I'll save it for another day. Yall will find some other crook out there to replace him I'm sure.
