NEW INFO: Elderly Bertie County Couple Found Dead

The Medical Examiner's Office says an elderly Bertie County couple found dead in their home Thursday morning were the victims of a murder-suicide.

The two bodies were found at a home off Highway 13 outside of Windsor around 7:00 a.m.

Family members tell WITN News that the victims are 86-year-old Dorothy Cowan and her 87-year-old husband Frank.

The family says the husband shot his wife and then himself out of love. They say Dorothy Cowan was an Alzheimer patient and that he had recently become ill himself. Relatives say the husband may have panicked, thinking his wife would have been left alone if something happened to him.

The Medical Examiner's Office says the wife died from a gunshot wound to the head and the cause of death is homicide. They say her husband died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the head.

Sheriff John Holley says the two were found in their bedroom and deputies recovered a handgun at the scene.

WITN - please follow the tradition of other news agencies in North Carolina and stop allowing comments on stories such as this. This story isn't a political debate, nor should it be a religious debate. Not one person posting here has a vote on the hereafter for this lovely couple. The comments are hurtful for the family and that is unfair. They are grieving enough without having the deluge of negativity that open comments can bring. Blocking comments is not censorship, it is a kindness.

May god bless this entire family and send peace to them. It's amazing how quick people are to judge others. If you are a true Christian you should not judge at all. GOD BLESS THIS FAMILY!!!!!!!

To DOris- first I wanna ask you, would you rather have the husband die, the wife continue to deteriorate, not recognize her family, lie in bed for several years to come, flesh rotting, soiling herself and finally die a horrible death than have the man who loved her take her life? You are right, the bible says thou shalt not kill, but he also forgives, perhaps the husband asked for forgiveness for what he did and was about to do. My hope is that they are both in Heaven. To everyone who commented respectfully and sends their condolences, I know the family appreciates it. It is nice to read such positive comments during such a terrible tragedy. My condolences to the family.

Please be gentle when writing comments about such a difficult time for this family. Only our Father in heaven knows Mr Cowan's mind. The only unpardonable sin is not accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. Our Father in heaven has the final judgement. Is 57: 1 & 2 Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior. John 3:16

I can only say that to be in love after 70 years is a wonderful thing... One never knows what is in someone elses heart or mind, but it seems one would have surely died of a broken heart if the other died first, so they decided to go together. I am not saying what is wrong or right, but LOVE and Death can sometimes have no answers. My condolences to the family members left behind to grieve.
