NEW INFO: Son Sentenced To Prison For Killing Dad

A former ECU student admitted today that he shot and killed his father more than a year ago in Greenville. Police say it was all done because his lies were catching up to him.

Kevin Kleber pleaded guilty to second degree murder. He was sentenced to serve between 9 and 12 years in prison.

Roy Kleber of Vero Beach, Florida was found dead in the son's University Park apartment on January 9th, 2011. Greenville police said at first the younger Kleber told them a black man shot his father as he was helping his son move.

Kleber was arrested two weeks later at Cherry Hospital, the state's psychiatric hospital in Goldsboro, after police say he admitted to killing his father.

Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Rob said Kleber "had been living a lie for the past two years." Prosecutors say the young man had lied to his family about having a job, lied about being enrolled at ECU, he was being evicted in his apartment and was behind on bills. Rob contended that Kleber knew his father would find out.

Kleber made the guilty plea to reduced charges with his mother and other family members in the courtroom.

Kleber broke down and cried several times during the hearing, telling the judge "I am profoundly, profoundly sorry."

Greenville police say Kleber's "house of cards" collapsed and that's what led to the shooting of the man's father.
