Washington Man Dead After Vehicle Lands In Canal

A man is dead after an SUV crashed into a Beaufort County canal full of water this morning.

The Highway Patrol says the wreck happened around 6:45 a.m. on Slatestone Road, near the intersection of Lizzard Slip Road.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Christopher "Joey" Spain, Jr. of Washington.

It took rescue crews more than an hour to remove the SUV from the water. The Chevy SUV was heavily damaged on its roof from the crash.

Troopers say the SUV was heading toward Washington when it lost control, went off the right side of the highway, and crossed back over to the other side. The SUV then crossed a small ditch, went through a yard and into a canal full of water, hitting a tree.

The homeowner says the SUV slid on its side through his yard, crossed the canal, slammed into the tree on its top and then the SUV slipped into the water, nose down.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating why Spain's vehicle ran off the road.

May GOD be with the "Spains" at this terrible time! My prayers are with each and every one! Nobody ever has the answers that we sooo bad want to hear, BUT in MY beleif he (Brandon and William) are all up above looking down on each and every one of us! You will never be forgotten! For the people that want to post such rude comments, yes ur opionion is URS BUT there is a time and a place to voice that opinion that is YOURS and I do not think this is the time nor the place, IF you were TRUE adults and had TRUE HEARTS you would already know this and not have to be told, IAM PRETTY SURE U ARE NOT A KID THAT HAS TO BE TAUGHT THESE THINGS! And remember: there is a person looking down and HE IS THE ONE THAT WILL JUDGE YOU WHEN YOUR TIME COMES, so lets worry about yourself, bc my friend Joey is already taken care of...living the best life ever now!!! God bless

Why does everybody think when someone dies they are going to heaven?

I know, right! Especially if they really believe, then the Bible says no one goes until "Judgement Day".Even preachers at funerals, say "he is in a better place now or he is in Heaven"...hello....

Its nice to see WITN woke up and took care of "DUH". Some folks can just be just class-less. Losing a loved one is tough enough.... The typical BoCo drama is really unnecessary. Thoughts and prayers are going up for the Spain family.

The grammar police are just as class-less in a case like this. It really is a sad event and I pray for this young mans loved ones to be able to make it through this tough time. As for all of you who feel the need to make rude comments and correct everyones spelling and grammar you really need to show more respect for the deceased and his family.

Thank you so much WITN for removing the comments made by "Duh"! A young life was lost way too early. He had family and friends that loved him very much. Only a cold-hearted individual could post something so terrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Joey's family and friends. It is only by the Grace of God that this was not one of my children. People need to think about karma before opening their ignorant mouths. God bless you Joey! You will be missed.

My sympathy/prayers go out to the family of this young man. I do not understand the rudeness/uncalled for comments of some people @ a time like this especially,or any time for that matter. This young man lost his life,no matter what he may/or may not have done. It still was a life lost.

Kudos to WITN... the removal of the negative comments is more than appreciated. Hope for future articles all comments are "approved" more thorough before being posted. Although I'm not apart of the family, I'm sure they are also very glad they are removed. To the Spain family...time will heal all...hold the memories of Joey close and never let his memory die..praying for the whole family. <3

Im not to sure who this "DUH" is but I am pretty sure me as well as everyone eles would like to know just who you are. Joey Spain was an amazing person, he was my cousin and close to me... the morning of the accident there was no acholol in his system at all, so do not put up here that there was... and as your other comment "your sure his family will mourn by doint the same thing that killed him" that was the lowest thing anyone could possibly say! If antyone is a bad person it is you, and whoever is the blame for you being raised the way you were... His life is gone and all you have to do with your life is get up here and right ugly things, maybe you should get a life and find something eles better to do bc i really feel sorry for you in everyway possible , bc one day THE SPAINs as well as everyone eles who loves Joey will find out who you are!!!! I love you Joey!!!

Jessica, in a time like this I am so sorry you have to put up with some idiot that you referenced in your comments (duh) that evidently posted stuff they had no idea what they were talking about. People can be so mean. Just know that Joey was loved by lots of people as you know and he is in a much better place and is in no pain. The entire Spain family is in our prayers.
