A man is dead after an SUV crashed into a Beaufort County canal full of water this morning.
The Highway Patrol says the wreck happened around 6:45 a.m. on Slatestone Road, near the intersection of Lizzard Slip Road.
The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Christopher "Joey" Spain, Jr. of Washington.
It took rescue crews more than an hour to remove the SUV from the water. The Chevy SUV was heavily damaged on its roof from the crash.
Troopers say the SUV was heading toward Washington when it lost control, went off the right side of the highway, and crossed back over to the other side. The SUV then crossed a small ditch, went through a yard and into a canal full of water, hitting a tree.
The homeowner says the SUV slid on its side through his yard, crossed the canal, slammed into the tree on its top and then the SUV slipped into the water, nose down.
The Highway Patrol is still investigating why Spain's vehicle ran off the road.
