NEW INFO: Fisherman Drowns In Cashie River

According to officials Bobby Dixon of Williamston drowned after he fell off a boat into the water near the Sans Souci Ferry dock in Bertie County Friday afternoon.

Officials say Dixon and his friend James Peele had just been fishing in the Cashie River when they went to go dock their boat. As they attempted to dock the boat Dixon lost his footing and fell into the water.

Officials say Dixon could not swim. They say Peele threw Dixon a life jacket, but Dixon was concentrating on treading water and was not able to reach it. They say Dixon then drowned.

Deputies were called out to the scene along with a dive team around 3:30 pm. They were able to locate the body just before 5 p.m.

WITN spoke with Dixon's wife Patricia Saturday who said, "He was a family man, he loved everybody, he helped everybody, and God took him where he did something he really loved to do."

The medical examiner has been called and state wildlife officers continue to investigate.

News pieces like this always makes me sad. My daddy Lathion Cooper drowned after falling off of his boat while fishing. July 5th will make 11 years since it happened, but to me it seems like it just happened yesterday. To the family, I am very sorry for your loss.
