NEW INFO: One Person Seriously Injured In Highway 17 Crash

One person was seriously hurt in a head-on crash Monday morning on Highway 17 in Craven County.

The wreck happened around 6:30 a.m. near Weyerhaeuser in the Ernul area.

Troopers say William Gaskins of Vanceboro was traveling south on the highway behind a line of traffic when he decided to pass. They say he apparently didn't see an oncoming car driven by James Pridgen of New Bern.

The 62-year-old Pridgen was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital with serious injuries while troopers say Gaskins was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Highway Patrol says charges are pending against Gaskins.
