FIRE MARSHAL: Homeless May Have Started Duplex Fire

Investigators in Greenville are looking into whether homeless people trying to stay warm in last night's frigid temperatures may have started a fire in the vacant side of a duplex.

WITN was there as crews extinguished the fire at the duplex on Cadillac Street just after 7:00 a.m.

Deputy Fire Marshal Wayne Peaden says there are reports of people staying in the empty part of the building. But no one was there when crews arrived.

The man living in the other unit was saved when a person passing by spotted the fire and alerted him.

The fire department says the blaze started in the living room area of the vacant unit and spread to the other side of the duplex. Peaden says the entire building will likely be condemned.

Officials in Greenville say a man inside a burning building has a passerby to thank for saving his life today.

A fire was reported just before 7 a.m. at a duplex on Cadillac St. near Colonial Ave., which is off Fifth St. in West Greenville. Officials on the scene told WITN that one side of the duplex is unoccupied, but a man lives in the other side. It's the side where no one lives that caught fire, officials say.

Officials say someone saw the fire from the street and alerted the man inside his home. He was able to escape without injury.

By 7:30 a.m., fire crews had the fire extinguished, the smoke continued to smolder.

Your republican, you collect SS, and medicare. You try your hardest to pay as few taxes as possible, you always complain and gripe about everyone around you and yet, somehow, the poor and misfortunate are "burdens on society". I bet you consider yourself a christian (right wing of course)..... Get a clue.

You are just another idiot who thinks everything revolves around political and/or religious views. Some people just have their own opinions. BOB is likely correct, and there is NOTHING political or religious in his comment.

I wish WITN would read these posts before they are posted. Posts like the ones "Steven" made should have never been allowed. Things will not get better here as long as WITN allowes bad posts here.

Cry me a river Charles... It's an opinion, oh, and freedom of speech. If it bothers you that badly, maybe there is some truth in what I say. Think about it, if you can.....

Try putting on 75 pounds of gear, going into something thats 1500 degrees and working in it. You cant ever have enough help on a working fire. Oh and goodluck with your 4 gpm waterhose...

it looks like it may have been about to get into the attic and in the walls goot luck with your garden hose! also there are many roles on a fire scene hence the 4 engines, some of those are water supply, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, interior attack and a back up team, good luck doing that with only a 3 man crew Steven

I just want to say that as a volunteer firefighter, I must agree with the earlier post - depending on the type of call, that is how many departments dispatch will tone out..if they aren't needed when the first on the scene arrives, they are told to cancel..I would much rather have too much help than not enough..you never know how big a fire is until you get there..and as for the garden hose, keep it close by..but I can assure you it will not put out a house fire in time to keep it at minimal damage..

Four trucks and countless volunteers for this... I could have put that out with a garden hose.

It's a paid department. As far as the garden hose goes... leave it to the pros.

Paid for with my tax money. NC doesn't have any to spare... Just making sure we're being wise with my money.

Steven, Are you saying that it isn't wise for the city of Greenville to have a paid fire department?

I hope you didn't base this fire on the one picture provided by WITN. They don't take time to estimate how many crews are needed before they make the call. The call goes out and all first responders who are able come. Better safe than sorry. Well, I wish you luck. Be sure to keep that hose handy in case a fire breaks out at your house. Don't call anyone for help if you can't appreciate that help.
