Shooting Suspect's Mother: Son Isn't "Cold Blooded"

Michael Miller made his first court appearance Thursday after a three county manhunt. He's accused of shooting someone in Washington multiple times Tuesday night. Police have not released the victim's name. Miller's mother spoke with WITN and says tensions had heightened the past few days after a fight between the victim and a close friend of her son's.

Thursday 20-year old Miller was assigned an attorney and read the charges against him which include assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon.

His mother says she does not support his actions, but says her son felt threatened.

"I believe he did what he did because it was either him or the other guy. I just want everybody to know my son is not a cold blooded person," said miller's mother Amy Cox.

Cox says her son never reported any alleged threats from the victim to police.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says Michael Miller, the 20-year-old wanted for the shooting of a man in Washington on Mallison Harvey Road about 10pm Tuesday was arrested Wednesday evening.

Deputies say Miller was found at a residence in Martin County, but they have not said who the home belongs to or if anyone else was inside at the time of the arrest.

Miller went before a Beaufort County magistrate to set bond for 3 charges- assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a felon, and an oustanding probation violation.

Miller is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $525,000 bond.

A manhunt is underway for a shooting suspect who is considered armed and dangerous.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says they are searching for 20-year-old Michael Miller of Washington. Miller is wanted for a shooting on Mallison Harvey Road in Washington.

Officials believe he shot a person multiple times just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies say although the shooting happened in Washington, Miller may be in the Greenville area.

Miller is a registered sex offender, just getting out from behind bars about five months ago. He was previously convicted of taking indecent liberties with a minor. In those five months since being released, Miller has been charged with a handful of crimes ranging from DWI to simple assault.

The victim was transported to the hospital in Washington before being transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The victim's name has not been released. Officials say he is in fair condition at the hospital.

Lt. Jamie Cahoon with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says the shooting happened in the middle of the road. She says the two men know each other and have had disputes in the past.

Anyone with information on the crime or the whereabouts of Miller is asked to call Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at (252) 974-6400.
