Troopers are still trying to find out why a bicyclist was riding in the middle of a travel lane on a dark highway when he was hit and killed Tuesday night.
First Sergeant C.L. Johnston said 46-year-old Russell Powell was wearing all dark clothing as he rode his bike in the travel lane of Highway 41 near Henderson Road in Trenton.
Investigators said at 8:48 p.m., 21-year-old Kevin Thompson hit the bicyclist.
Troopers said the bike itself had only one small reflector on the back and did not comply with current bicycle laws for the state.
On Wednesday, troopers said at there was no indication that the driver was impaired by alcohol, drugs, or that he was traveling at an unsafe speed.
The investigation continues and no charges have been filed.
The Highway Patrol says it responded to a call about a pedestrian hit just before 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night on Highway 41 near Henderson Road in Trenton in Jones County.
DOT says the road was closed in both directions at one point and traffic had to be detoured due to a vehicle accident.
The Highway Patrol says the road is back open as of 10:30 p.m., but the details of the incident have not been released.
