A man airlifted to the the burn center in Chapel Hill after his home caught fire Friday has died of his injuries.
Pamlico County Fire Marshal Chris Murray confirms that 72-year-old Robert Gibbs died that very same night at the burn center.
Murray says that there was an explosion in the gas line of the home Friday morning that started the blaze.
Authorities say a Pamlico County man was airlifted to the burn center in Chapel Hill after a fire this morning.
Sheriff Billy Sawyer Jr. told WITN that 72-year-old Robert Gibbs was the only person home at the time when the house caught fire.
Dispatchers said at 6:27 a.m. fire officials got the initial call of a home on fire on the 4300 block of Florence Road in Merritt.
Neighbors tell WITN that insulation and glass was found some 100 feet away and that they heard a boom.
Fire Marshal Chris Murray said three fire departments were on the scene battling the blaze which was under control in about 20 minutes.
The fire marshal says at this time there is nothing suspicious about the fire, even though a team from the State Bureau of Investigation is on the way to help determine a cause.
