Assistant Principal Steps Down Following Principal's Resignation

Less than two weeks after the principal of a Beaufort County school resigned, an assistant principal at the school has also stepped down.

The assistant principal at Northside High School, Mary Beth Jackson, has resigned. The reason Jackson's leaving was not announced. Neither was the reason for the resignation of Principal Donna Moore on Oct. 6.

In July Moore admitted that she gave away about 40 to 50 trophies and plaques that had been put in storage last year. After parents and former students showed their disapproval, the school began reclaiming the awards.

Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Don Phipps has issued a statement. It reads:

“In light of the recent resignations at Northside High School, I want to dispel rumors and speculation that the resignations resulted from misconduct related to NHS test scores. The progress that Northside High has made in the areas of student achievement, graduation rate, and dropout rate is the result of the hard work of the staff and students at Northside High School. Any rumor or speculation otherwise unfairly diminishes the hard work of all involved. Northside High School achieved School of Distinction in 2010-2011 based on genuine student performance and those involved deserve to feel proud and honored to have reached this level.”

Moore resigned on October 6th. She had been principal at Northside since January 2009. She had been with Beaufort County Schools since 1994.

Jackson resigned last Wednesday. She became assistant principal at the high school in September 2006 and also started with the school system in 1994.
