FIRST ON WITN: Fatal Hit & Run Suspect Makes First Appearance


Ten months after deputies say he hit a man on a highway and left him for dead, William Langley made his first appearance in court in the case.

The 47 year old was arrested Tuesday and charged with the hit and run that killed Austin Baeza in August 2012. Langley is charged with felony hit and run involving serious injury or death, felony obstructing justice and driving while license revoked.

A judge told Langley during his appearance at the Pitt County Detention Center that the crimes he is accused of carry a maximum sentence of ten years and eight months in prison. Langley will be issued a court-appointed attorney to represent him. Following the brief court appearance, Langley was sent back behind bars.

An arrest has been made in a hit and run accident that killed a college student exactly ten months ago today.

Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks says William Langley has been charged in the death of Austin Baeza.

The 19-year-old was killed on August 18th while walking on Highway 33 in Pitt County.

For months the victim's family pleaded for people to come forward with information on Baeza's death.

The 47-year-old Langley has been charged with felony hit and run involving serious injury or death, felony obstructing justice and driving while license revoked. He's jailed on a $250,000 bond.

Sheriff Elks says tips from the public led to Langley's arrest.

Langley has been in trouble with the law before. He has several drug convictions from Pitt County as well as convictions for DWI, speeding from police and reckless driving.
