Mom Has No Regrets About Taking Baby To Mississippi

The mother of a one year old baby who was the subject of a statewide Amber Alert says she has no regrets about taking her daughter to Mississippi.

Cathy Victoria Wells was located this morning in Cleveland, Mississippi, some 860 miles from Snow Hill. Greene County lawmen says the baby disappeared after a local judge order the Department of Social Services to take custody of the child.

Sheriff Lemmie Smith says when DSS went to pick up the baby the parents were gone. He says her parents,Christy Dubois and Rodney Wells, are accused of taking the baby. It is not known if they face any charges yet in the case.

Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon says Greene County deputies tracked the parents' cell phone which led Mississippi authorities to find the baby. He says the baby's parents were also found.

Family members tell WITN News that the baby is now being flown back to Greene County where she will be placed in foster care. They say Dubois' step-mother lives in Cleveland.

DuBois told WITN News that even though they acted in a rash manner, if they had to do it again, they would because it gave them more time with their daughter.

DuBois says they were told by DSS they cannot see the baby for one month, or until their next court date which is June 27th. The couple is on their way back to North Carolina and say they do not face any charges.

The mother says the baby was taken away because DSS had investigated allegations of domestic abuse. DuBois says she was recently struck by a softball and that DSS believes it was her husband who hit her. The wife says there have been no charges brought in that case.

Previous Story

A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for a missing one year old baby after the sheriff says her parents abducted her.

Cathy Victoria Wells is a 1-year-old white female, approximately 2' 3" and 18 pounds. She has brown hair, and brown eyes. There is no photo available of the girl yet.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith says her parents,Christy Dubois and Rodney Wells are accused of taking the baby. Christy Dubois is described as a 35-year-old white female with brown hair.

Rodney Wells is described as a 39-year-old white male, 5'10", 170 pounds, with black hair.

Smith says on Monday a judge issued an order that Wells be turned over to the Department of Social Services because of concerns over the baby's welfare. He says when DSS went to pick up the baby the parents were gone.

The sheriff say they may be headed from Snow Hill to Mississippi in a blue 2001 Chevrolet Silverado with NC license tag number XT1240.

WITN checked with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and they say so far North Carolina has not requested they issue an Amber Alert there for the baby and parents.

If you have any information regarding this reported abduction, call the Greene County Sheriff's Office immediately at (252) 747-3411, or call 911 or *HP.

I do not know this couple or anything about their family life. I do know that DSS's nationwide are full of corruption. Things like this happen EVERYDAY to INNOCENT PARENTS. So, the emergency room workers say the wound she had could not have been caused by a softball? COME ON! I say, let her husband stand across from one of them and throw the ball at them and see what happens!

My question for the mother is this: did the DSS worker have a warrant? If not, she should NOT have let her in! If a leo or someone from a place like DSS comes to your door and you let them in without a warrant, you are admitting they have a right to be there! And who do the emergency room workers at Pitt think they are? Judge and jury? How do you prove you are innocent? The justice system is supposed to prove you are guilty. At least, that is the way it is SUPPOSED to be, but I guess, not anymore in Amerika.

So there's no evidence of anything, yet tax payers are going to foot the bill for this kid to be in foster care. You know, judges are elected, too. I hope WITN has the cahones to print the name of the judge that made the ruling.

honestly this whole thing was an I will show you move by Greene County DSS someone in the family made DSS mad there are certain criteria for Amber Alerts as shown here a parent taking their own child to avoid DSS taking custody is no crime or reason to issue an Amber Alert Greene County DSS has clearly abused this system to say I will show you now there will be Amber Alerts every other day because DSS has chosen to use this system to "show" a parent that they are a bigger force

OMG so they took the child cause they "suspect" domestic abuse.. They have no proof a hearing hasnt even happened. Are you serious.. The kid looks happy and healthy. This is disturbing..

I would be more worried about parents of a one-year-old child (especially first-time parents) who never fight. Couples fight. It happens in all relationships. And babies add stress that adds to that. The Government wanted to take their baby, so they put their lives on hold and ran. If that doesn't show dedication to the well-being of a child, I don't know what does. Children are neglected, abused, and sometimes exploited and raped in foster care -- this isn't a stereotype but a statistic. Meanwhile you always also hear about good parents who can't get kids because the system wants to keep kids in the system.

I know the situation and I know it is bs besides if you have had a child removed before that does not mean all your children will be taken even if they need to be if that was the case there would be hundreds of these cases in Greene County

It is a known FACT that GC DSS needs to be investigated. Because they haven taken children for VERY POOR EXCUSES. They need to look at people that ABUSE on NEGLECT there CHILDREN.

Greene County DSS isn't the only DSS that needs to be investigated. I think practically all of them need to be investigated.

Didn't know that a man hitting his wife could be a reason for having your child taken away from you. I always thought there had to be some kind of abuse to the child...Learn something new everyday!! There are so many children being abused by the hands of their parents and nothing done until it's to late, for some.. but here they are saying the Father abused the Mother so that gave DSS rights to have the child remove??? How was the child abused??? Just don't understand DSS!!!

It is a very common thing for children to be removed from the home for domestic abuse, all over NC.

it is not healthy for the child to witness such situations of the father beating on the mother. it hinders the child from flourishing in a healthy manner, both mentally and physically because they may want to hit others in their life also. i'm glad the child is removed!!

for this child's sake, I pray that the parents can prove the allegations of hr abuse unfounded. As a child, I was hit with a baseball. One of my own children were hit with a foul ball, so it does happen but usually there are plenty of witnesses...

If that is really the reason they were taking the baby, I would have done the same thing.
